- Belgium
Nick MICHIELS received the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Hasselt university in 2016, where he is currently an assistant professor in the Faculty of Engineering Technology. He is affiliated with the Expertise Centre for Digital Media (EDM), a core lab of Flanders Make and a research centre of the university.
He is one of the lead researchers in the Visual Computing group with expertise in the domains of computer vision, computer graphics, and image processing, including research on image-based rendering, XR, sim2real, and relighting. As a member of the Flanders Make ecosystem, he conducts research on challenges in the manufacturing industry, involving research on synthetic data generation for training AI models, allowing to reduce the labelling cost in a high-variance, low-volume manufacturing environment. In addition, he is doing research on the easy acquisition and visualization of digital twins for XR environments, an important technology enabler for realistic operator training.
